5 Things I Learned Working On A Large Canvas

This was the first large commission piece I had done up to the time of the video. I was nervous and was not prepared for how different a large canvas really is to work with.

Here are some things I learned from doing this large piece:

  1. Make a little more paint than you calculate needing. Many times when working with smaller canvases I use too much paint and end up with more waste than I would like. I found that with larger canvases it is not only about how much paint is “technically” needed to cover the canvas size, it is also about how much paint is needed for the movement required. You will notice I layered a third cup of paint after I already started tilting and it helped.

  2. Don’t record layering the cups for a large painting. It is way too long for a video that people are going to watch. BUT! If you do, make sure you are closer to the camera than I was. Not only is it a little boring to watch, people could barely see what I was doing from so far away. (Feel free to fast forward :-) )

  3. Leave enough room between the camera and table to walk around. This is especially important with a large canvas. You have to move back and forth around the sides of the table to move the paint to where you want it to go.

  4. Place the camera where you won’t be working and tilting away from it. I definitely need some practice with my video techniques. That is about all I will say about that for now.

  5. Use larger stands. I have since purchased stands from Molly’s Artistry to keep the canvas higher from the table. This way when I need to get my hands under the sides I don’t accidentally mess up the sides. Everything dried fine but I definitely had to pay a lot of attention every time I needed to lift up the canvas and it’s something that is just easier to not have to think about.

I hope some the things I learned in my first large piece of fluid artwork helps you in your journey of making fluid art. Drop me a comment below if you have additional tips or questions!
