The Dutch Pour Will Always Be My Fav….
There are two techniques I am constantly striving to improve because I love them so much. One is the Shelee Bloom Technique, which I will someday do a video on, and the other is the Dutch Pour. It seems as soon as I’ve got the Dutch Pour down, I want to try something a little different so I’m starting to learn it all over again to achieve what I want.
This time was no different.
I used all metallics except for my white base and Payne’s Gray in my puddle.
We recently renovated our fireplace and I needed something to put in the corner of the room. The room has mostly browns and grays so I wanted mostly neutrals. Here’s what happened….
My paints were a bit thick. It’s New England, in February, in my basement, my paint tends to thicken in colder temperatures and I should have either thinned them out or warmed up the room for a little longer before starting. You’ll notice at some point of blowing out I turned my hair dryer up to high, which I don’t normally need to do. One thing I suggest if you ever have to do that is to keep you dryer further away from the canvas so as not to get splats of paints on your negative space, unless you are going for that of course, which sometimes I am :-)
I wanted more negative space in the center of the canvas. While I am completely thrilled with how this turned out, I will try again and start blowing from closer to center so that I don’t have a lot of un-blown paint in the center to move someplace.
The colors I used did muddy a bit. Most times I don’t like that. But this time, with the colors I used I am absolutely ecstatic with the resulting composition and marbling effect of the metallics. I wish I had used a bit more copper but overall I think this turned out stunning.
